The third edition of the Symposium on Urban Mining and Circular Economy, SUM 2016, organised by the International Waste Working Group (IWWG – www.iwwg.eu) and promoted by the Lombardy Region with the scientific support of the Universities of Padova, Bergamo and several foreign universities, was held from 23rd to 25th May 2016 in the Old Monastery of Saint Augustine in Bergamo, Italy.
The Symposium was attended by 235 delegates from 36 different countries, with the presentation of 145 scientific papers selected among over 200 submitted proposals. The programme included three parallel tracks for a total of 19 oral sessions, 9 NetWorking sessions, a poster session and a technical tour to the recycling plant of Montello (Bergamo, Italy).
A great success was enjoyed by the NetWorking Sessions (NeWS): informal sessions organised to promote open discussion, to debate on specific topics related to the circular economy and to create new international working groups.
The closure of the conference was celebrated with formal dinner in the "Colleoni & Dell'Angelo" restaurant in Bergamo's upper city.
The guided technical tour, held on Wednesday 25th May 2016, represented a final moment of study at Montello SpA, a real scale plant in sorting, recovery and recycling of post-consumer plastic packaging as well as in the treatment, recovery and recycling of organic waste from separate collection.
